prices

This is the tough page where I have to tell you that I can't work for free.
Every discount I give you I will be short of when it comes to paying bills
and taxes. The prices you find massages and yoga classes for in the
Northwest of England are amazing. I don't know how people survive on
the small fees that they charge. I know we are all in the boat that is squeezed
for money..

But here comes this: You receive a service that just maybe you don't yet understand the full meaning of. The full value is possibly something you will not fully appreciate. Even so it is your body.. It take s a lot, a lot of learning and a lot of dedication, intention and love to be your body work practitioner, your yoga teacher (,your artist even).

Of course go and take a bargain when you see one, but those are not offered in a sustainable way..
What do I mean by this? When you get a massage for £20 and the practitioner still has to pay £7.50 of this to the place they offer the massage in, then the person who cared for you in the past hour or more receives £12.50. For a massage. Maybe you don't yet realize what I am getting at.

To train to be a trustworthy massage practitioner takes hundreds of hours and likely thousands of pounds. Let alone training of a massage therapist who should have no less than 500 hours direct education / training plus have passed intensive anatomy and physiology education. One can not be a therapist with less than 500 hours training and personally I wouldn't not be able to believe that 500 hours buy the knowledge of THERAPY. Look out for therapists who have in the region of 1000 hours education. Yes 1000. Now can you imagine the cost of this?

I am a massage practitioner. I had direct and intensive training for about 200+ hours. This for me, and I was exceptionally lucky meant that I would have a teacher almost to myself. Often one to one, at times I would have 2 (yes 2) teachers to myself or at other times we would be 2 students and one teacher. Do you see this ratio?! It is outstandingly lucky to have such attention of teachers as knowledgeable and kind as mine were. This comes at a price.

Now think about your body worker's hands and body. They absorb a lot of your strain, they work with it, ease it, give you their INTENTION and attention. This can leave a toll on their body's. And it is not as easy as saying: oh but they wanted to become massage practitioners, they chose this. We are speaking about early onset of Arthritis because bodyworkers work too much. Why do they do it? Because nobody can live of £12.50. You say: there are a lot of hours in a day.

Safely I do not think a massage practitioner can work an 8 hour day. Not without los of quality of the one receiving the massage, not without causing long term strain and potentially irreversible damage to the bodyworker herself/himself. Ultimately we have to ask: what do we get out of a tired and hurt massage giver? Does it serve us and how much does it serve us to tire out those exact people we seek out for our wellness..?

Isn't there something wrong when we value wellness, well being, our health and that of those supporting our health so little?

What is the real cost of massage?
A lot. And you are paying a fair price when you pay around £45 - £60 per hour. In London this goes up, starting no lower than £45, likely starting around £60+.

Ultimately this is all about Fair Trade, the lovely label without which we never buy chocolate, coffee or bananas (we don't do we!?).. But it is about Fair Trade at home, not only in the bar of chocolate that adds to our feel good factor..

If the full price is outside of your reach, by all means, OF COURSE book a massage with a practitioner who offers it at a low price. But maybe take a moment to ask them how they can live and pay their bills. Or bring a home baked bread to say thank you for the discounted option. What we all like to know most of all is that the things we offer in the world are received with gratitude.

As far as I am concerned £20 for a massage in the UK is a donation not a payment. I am happy to accept donations of those who are on low income, but I would like to ask you to be mindful about asking. If you go out for meal, buy new clothes regularly, enjoy wine a few evenings a week, regularly go to the cinema or theater then I am not sure you should request a low income priced massage. Please pay more.

Massages are something that is about a truthful energy exchange. A good massage practitioner will never touch you with anything less than full intention. Make sure to recognize the value of that.
